Evan Dorkin Comics Explained

Q: Who?

A: Evan Dorkin. He's a comic strip artist who's probably best known for his Milk and Cheese comics -- in which a pair of surly, usually drunk dairy products go on rampages causing violence and general mayhem. Sometimes with clever socially commentary, and sometimes because I think Evan Dorkin just likes drawing general mayhem. (Who wouldn't?)

But anyway, in addition to the more popular Milk and Cheese comics, Evan also wrote Dork! The Dork! books were these little anthologies of random comics that he had created -- usually not more than a few pages. Most of them were really quite funny. Then somewhere around #7, he, as those in the psychological profession like to say, "royally freaked out." Luckily, I think he got things back together. Last I heard, he and his girlfriend were writing scripts for Batman: The Animated Series and drawing some Superman stuff as well. So that's good.

One of my favorite Dork! pieces were these little strips collectively displayed under the Fun heading. While I'd like to share all of them with you, I think that'd be massive copyright infringement. So instead, I'll just share the ones that were a tad on the obscure side and could use a little more explanation. So it's just minor copyright infringement.

Q: Hahahahaha! Ummm... okay. I don't get it.

A: Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead is all about how the main character, Howard Roarke, never compromised his principles, and was willing to destroy his own work instead of betraying its original vision. There was also some part about how if you wanted a woman to love you, you should rape her, and then as a symbol of her everlasting love to you, she'd go and marry your antithesis. Or something like that.

Q: How do you pronounce "Ayn" anyway?

A: I believe it rhymes with "Fine".

Q: Yeah... what a sad commentary on life that nobody know this... uh... famous... er... historian?

A: Jack Kirby was a comic book artist and writer. It would probably be a fair comparison to say that Kirby was to comics what Elvis was to rock n' roll. Heard of The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk? Kirby created (or co-created) 'em. And, from what I hear, he was a hell of a nice guy.

Q: Okay, this one's funny 'cuz Pearl Jam haven't recorded any new videos since their first album, and so the guy's being stupid because there's no such thing as a new Pearl Jam video, right?

A: No, I think Evan Dorkin just hates Pearl Jam.

So, that's about it. Thanks for visiting!

Q: Wait. That's it? Three lousy comics?

A: Uhh... yeah. I guess I liked the idea of an "Evan Dorkin Comics Explained" page so much that it didn't occur to me that there weren't too many comics that needed an explanation. Most of 'em you can kinda figure out on your own.

Oh, whatever.

Okay, go read something else now...
