Historical Note
The drawback for working for a giant corporation (besides the ankle-bracelet tracking tags, which chafe really badly) is that our legal department is very strict about... well... everything.

You see, you may be thinking to yourself, "Golly! These quizzes would be a lot better if I could pick my answers from a drop-down list or something." Well, it turns out our legal department wouldn't let me -- in order to make sure the Funny Pages were classified as a magazine-like publication instead of a game (because magazines are apparently able to get away with more than games are), they asked me for quizzes like this to take out anything interactive. Which is why you don't get to answer your . I don't know how those guys at Filmwise get away with it.

Hey, kids! It's time for...

It is the English that breaks challenge of music!
(The Broken English Musical Challenge)

Ever been to those web sites that can translate text from, like, English to Korean? Well, we went to one of those sites and brought along some of our favorite song lyrics from the past 30 years. We translated them from English to French, then to German, then to Chinese and Portuguese before we finally translated everything back to Enligsh. By the time we were done, things didn't sound quite the same as when we had started.

For example, take the first few lines of that timeless Barry Manilow classic Copacabana:

Her name was Lola,
She was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair
And a dress cut down to there

By the time we were finished translating it, it had lost some of its original fragile poetry:

Her name is Lola,
she are one showgirl
and the decadent feather in hers hair
and the formal clothes reduce to there

Anyway, here's a few other song lyrics we ran through the translation wringer. Can you figure out which artists sang the original English versions of each of these songs? As a hint, we'll tell you that we pulled all of the songs from the following list...

  • "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie
  • "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" by Pink Floyd
  • "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears
  • "California Girls" by The Beach Boys
  • "Into the Groove" by Madonna
  • "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones
  • "Love Shack" by The B-52s
  • "My Sacrifice" by Creed
  • "Our Lips Are Sealed" by The Go-Go's
  • "Take It Easy" by The Eagles

You may want to watch some poorly-translated Kung-Fu movies to get started. Good luck!

East these the seacoast girl is
I truly digs which these styles they wears the buttocks
I are lonely is massacre
I whom I must admit always believe
when I am not with you I destroy my spirit
gives me a character
struck me baby more once
I took myself a motor vehicle,
am her also largely like a whale
and us steer myself downward in function
at the like house
It is not not very common to be liked by no matter whom
that it is not not very common to have the recreation with no matter whom
but when I see you stopping you approximately with no matter whom
it is not not very common to see me crying and me wants to die
Everybody you meet
for a long time dance
in roads all nights
Well I execute down from the road,
trying to detach my loading
which I have seven women on my spirit,
four at those want me to possess,
two, which want me stony,
legend that she is a friend at me
